A school policy bill has passed in Gilgit-Baltistan due to Panah’s efforts
: The GB Government is pleased to announce that it has decided to regulate food items in educational institutes and their vicinity through the ‘Gilgit Baltistan Educational Institutions Food Standard Regulation, 2022.’
The law has been approved by the Cabinet. It is for the first time that the government has legislated on food safety and nutrition. Substandard diet in growing age is the number one risk factor in the burden of disease and is a central driver for all forms of malnutrition and many non-communicable diseases (NCD’s). To rectify that, the law aims to provide hygienic and quality food to students to supplement their physical and mental growth.
The law classifies in detail the types of food encouraged, prohibited or that should be taken with caution. The basic goal is to improve nutritional status of students. It comprehensively proposes penalties for noncompliance by perpetrators which is expected to act as a deterrent to food provider and sellers.
